You've probably noticed, and may already have tried out, the new scanner in the library. We've been hoping to get our hands on one of these for a while, and thanks to a sale at the University of Idaho we have acquired one.

Below will be a brief guide to using the various features of the scanner.

Before you begin, you can use the scrollbar at the top to optimize your scan for the type of item you would like to scan: Document, book, newspaper, etc.

You can also hit the little gear next to the materials bar for some extra scan settings ahead of time; though most of this can also be adjusted later to similar effect. Here are the available settings in this menu:

These settings are fairly self-evident.

Once you have chosen your item, hit "SCAN". Then, place your item on the tray below. The guidelines on the scanning bed will help you place the item straight to the scanner, but don't worry about putting it at any edge: the scanner will detect your item and eliminate any visible part of the bed outside of the scan dimensions.

Before it scans, the device may ask you to agree to some terms and licenses. Tl;dr but I'm sure they're fine. Just make sure you cite anything you scanned before publishing and you should be clear.

Once you've agreed to those, it will scan the item. If you need to re-scan, that option will be available on the side. Give it a moment to complete the scan, then you'll get this option screen:

Once you have completed a scan, you will see some options to edit before completing the project. There are four menus: General, Compose, Effects, and Text.

"TEXT" allows you to add text, citations, emojis, and frames to your work.

EFFECTS allows you to change properties of the scan such as color, lighting, and rotation.

The last step is to send yourself a copy of your scan. Hit "E-Mail PDF" and you'll be prompted to input the recipient.

And there you have it! Try not to mess with the Scanner TOO much. And please do NOT put food or drink on the scanner, unless you fancy a few thousand dollars in replacement fees.
